XX. Names and Functions of the Seven Archangels.
1And these are the names of the holy angels who watch.There are seven archangels in this chapter, but only four are mentioned in i-xix, cf. xxi-xxxvi. See lxxxi. 5. Other discrepancies, however, are reduced by the evidence of Gᵍ. 2Uriel, one of the holy angels, who is over the world and over Tartarus. 3Raphael, one of the holy angels, who is over the spirits of men. 4Raguel, one of the holy angels who †takes vengeance on† the world of the luminaries. 5Michael, one of the holy angels, to wit, he that is set over the best part of mankind ╓and╖ over chaos.Michael is Israel's guardian angel, as in Dan. x. 13, 21, xii. 1, and elsewhere. Cf. xxiv. 6. 6Saraqâêl, one of the holy angels, who is set over the spirits, who sin in the spirit. 7Gabriel, one of the holy angels, who is over Paradise and the serpents and the Cherubim.Gabriel, not Raphael, should be the speaker in xxxii, according to this verse. 8Remiel, one of the holy angels, whom God set over those who rise.
